The camp will develop fundamental baseball skills and enhance the technical abilities of more advanced players. In addition, the camp builds a sense of independence while incorporating self confidence, self esteem and team building. Core values incorporated into the program are respect, patience, cooperation, courage and trust.

BASKETBALL

Over the years in basketball, shooting, passing, and dribbling have become more
sophisticated.  Tall men once dominated the game, however, a skilled athlete is now able to dominate.  Learning and understanding the basic skills is important to amateur players, as well as learning how to work well as a cohesive team.  This workshop is intended to develop new skills, home current ones, and develop a well-rounded team player.

HOCKEY

Hockey is perhaps one of the oldest “ball and stick” games, but is still a popular game in North America.  Coordinated stick-handling, passing, and shooting may look easy, but the skills necessary to master them comes through continued coaching and practice.  The members of this workshop will be able to use our outdoor “street hockey” rink to practice and play competitive games with the guidance of our coaches.

ROCK CLIMBING

Rock climbing is a sport that often tests a climber’s strength, endurance, agility, and balance along with his or her mental control.  However, it is not a difficult sport to master with proper guidance and support.  Safety, along with climbing skills, will be continually stressed.  Each climber will be able to safely reach the summit of our rock wall while learning to improve his or her skills.  Every climber at the end of this workshop will fee the sense of accomplishment.

ULTRA ADVENTURE CHALLENGE

This new addition to our camp will provide campers the opportunity to explore and enhance physical and life skills.  Life skills include trust, communication, respect and teamwork.  This is accomplished as campers work their way through exciting obstacles that are both physically and mentally challenging.  As they work their way through the course, counselors help them become aware of their strengths and weaknesses allowing the individual and group to become more successful.

OCEANOGRAPHY AND MARINE BIOLOGY

Grab your aqua socks and your microscopes and get soaked with the Sand Stormers!  This program is delivered by The Long Island Science Museum and will explore the rich ecology of our local ponds and beaches where our campers will gather, identify, and examine the exciting creatures living there! The Sand Stormers will travel to Cedar Beach Environmental Center, Avalon Park, Flax Ponds, Sand Street Beach and even journey to Atlantis Marine World where they will explore the interactive Salt Marsh.  Water samples will be collected from each location.  The Sand Stormers will return to the “lab” for analysis of salinity and oxygen levels and get up close and personal with creatures from the sea in the dissection lab.  See first-hand the outer AND inner beauty of our underwater friends.

GENETIC DETECTIVE

Love a great mystery? Join the DNA Detectives investigation team!  With the help of the Long Island Science Museum, the Detectives use fingerprinting, DNA extraction techniques, dissection skills, and archaeology to answer questions of the past and the present. The DNA Detectives experience includes: DNA Fingerprinting:  Use the methods crimestoppers rely upon to catch bad guys!  Students will collect and prepare a sample, set a gel plate, pipette the sample and analyze the results.  DNA Extraction: Isolate plant DNA and explore its incredible role in making every creature unique.

EARTH SHATTERING SCIENCE

Avalanches! Volcanoes! and Earthquakes!  Shake up your world as you discover the dynamic forces that shape our planet and change it everyday.  Learn the science behind the powerful forces of Mother Nature.  Examine the various layers of a volcano and figure out why they erupt. Perform experiments that mimic these natural disasters. How does a building’s height affect its stability?  Which building design will best withstand an earthquake?  Create your own Snow-Capped Mountain and watch an avalanche right before your eyes!  Hold on to your seat throughout this rocking and rolling ride.

ROBOTICS/GIZMOS AND GADGETS

Ever dreamed of building your own personal robot? Here's your chance!  In our robotics workshop you'll find out exactly what makes a robot tick and learn how to build one, too.  If you'd like to become a mechanical whiz, you'll love our Gizmos & Gadgets program.  You'll learn all about the engineering of complex structures such as bridges and elevators.  You'll use levers, inclined planes, screws, pulleys, wheels and wedges to build your own machines. And imagine - you will even build your own "edible" house!
