PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Goals:
The Laurel Hill School Physical Education Program provides for enjoyable activities and learning experiences which are broad in scope and emphasize the establishment of healthy habits, sportsmanship, teamwork, sport skill, knowledge, and physical improvement.
Facilities:
We utilize many facilities including a brand new Rock Wall and Project Adventure Course, 2 soccer fields, an archery range, outdoor hockey rink and basketball court. Also included are newly refurbished tennis courts and a rigorously maintained baseball field.
Course Outline:
The President’s Physical Fitness Test is administered at the beginning of the school year and is an important tool for gauging each student’s level of physical fitness. Grade levels participate in activities derived from the following list during the school year:
Sample Units and Skills Covered:
- Fitness Testing: Mile Run, Shuttle Run, Pull-up Test, Sit-Up Sit Test and Sit and Reach. These tests work on the students muscular endurance, agility, muscular strength, and flexibility.
- Project Adventure: The goals of Project Adventure are to increase the participants sense of personal confidence and to increase cooperation, respect, and support within a group.
- Rock Wall: 4 different levels and challenges.
- Basketball: passing, dribbling, layups, offense and defensive strategies.
- Tennis: serves, forehand, backhand drive, smash
- Soccer: passing, dribbling, foot skill
- . Volleyball: bumping, setting, serving, spiking, digging
- . Hockey: passing, stick handling, shooting
- Baseball: offense and defensive strategies, hitting, fielding, pitching and base running
- Football: passing, receiving, handoffs, running
- Archery: shooting, form, aim, release
- Track and Field: 4x4 relays, hurdles, shot put
- European Handball: passing, shooting, offense and defense
- Badminton: hitting, defense strategies, offense strategies
Lacrosse: passing, shooting, cradling, scooping, goaltending, offensive and defensive skills
