LHS DEBATE TEAM
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Should cell phones be allowed in schools? Do credit cards do more harm than good? Should Iran be allowed to develop nuclear weapons? Should junk food be banned from schools? What do you think? These are just a small sample of topics your LHS Debate Team may argue at middle school debate tournaments.
There are two sides to every competitive debate: the proposition team makes a case in favor of the debate issue, while the opposition team makes an argument against it. As a member of the LHS Debate Team you will train to do it all!
You will learn to research and defend a variety of positions on controversial issues and heighten your awareness of current events. In addition, you will sharpen your public speaking skills, and develop strong research and persuasion techniques. Great for the lawyer, politician and philosopher in you!
WHY DEBATE?
Because you care!
You care about great ideas and, mostly, you care about making a better world. And you know it all starts with each one of us and the very beginning is your own commitment!
Debate also helps develop speaking, thinking, and listening skills. You will become more engaged in the world around you and gain a sophisticated knowledge about a wide range of current events and complex ideas.
It prepares you for success in high school and college. Debate helps you take active responsibility for your own learning in a challenging and dynamic atmosphere.
