6th GRADE
The beauty of art lies in our ability to create with freedom and to be proud of our individual styles of self-expression.
Presenting themes and demonstrating techniques along with providing reference and inspiration are all successful techniques in promoting learning and creativity in art class.
Students create projects that allow them to enjoy the creative process while being challenged to explore new concepts, techniques and mediums. Mediums we work with include watercolor and tempera paints, oil and chalk pastels, colored pencils and clay. A variety of additional materials are incorporated to enhance artwork and add surface texture.
In our sixth grade course of study, students learn the fine art technique of color mixing and the importance of this skill as an artist. They are introduced to culture and tradition of the Navaho Indians. Native American Motifs and designed are studied and designs are created in traditional sand techniques representative of this culture.
The elements and principles of design are reinforced as we study about the famous designs of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Students have the opportunity to design their own creative structure incorporating these principles along with the concepts of perspective.
Students learn about famous artists and their artworks. Picasso’s Guernica, Munch’s The Scream, and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Warhol, Wyeth, Mondrian and Dali are just a few more artists we study. Artwork is created in the technique of the particular artist we are studying. The study of classical, realistic, abstract, and impressionistic styles is a special focus which enhances the students’ understanding of the differences between each fine art movement.
7th GRADE

Students produce projects that allow them to enjoy the creative process while being challenged to explore new concepts, techniques and mediums. Mediums we work with include watercolor and tempera paints, oil and chalk pastels, colored pencils and clay. A variety of additional materials are incorporated to enhance artwork and add surface texture.
In our seventh grade course of study, students learn the fine art technique of color mixing and the importance of this skill as an artist. They learn drawing techniques incorporating contour, value, texture and contrast. Linear perspective and space are also studied enabling students to grasp this often-difficult concept. The elements and principles of design are also explored and students create a decorative booklet representing these concepts. Students are encouraged to incorporate digital images and graphics in their artwork.
Students are introduced to famous artists, their artworks and the artistic movements they inspired. They study Henri Matisse and Fauvism, Surrealism and Marc Chagall, Georgia O’Keefe and Abstract Expressionism and Georges Seurat and Pointillism. Artwork is created in the technique of the artist and style being studied. Students learn the culture and symbolism of maskmaking and create an embellished three-dimensional mask.

8th GRADE

Students produce projects that allow them to enjoy the creative process while being challenged to explore new concepts, techniques and mediums. Mediums we work with include watercolor and tempera paints, oils and chalk pastels, colored pencils and clay. A variety of additional materials are incorporated to enhance artwork and add surface texture.
In our eighth grade course of study, students learn the fine art technique of color mixing and the importance of this skill as an artist. They learn drawing techniques incorporating contour, value, texture and contrast. Linear perspective and space are also studied enabling students to grasp this often-difficult concept. The elements and principles of design are also explored. These concepts are applied to a masking project that the eighth grade students create as a permanent artwork for the Laurel Hill School.
Students learn about famous artists, their artworks and the artistic movements they inspired. They study Henri Matisse and Fauvism, March Chagall and Surrealism, Georgia O’Keefe and the Abstract Expressionism and Georges Seurat and Pointillism. Artwork is created in the technique of the artist and style being studying. Students learn about printmaking techniques from Japanese, Indian and African cultures. They produce prints based on the techniques of these rich cultures.
